The world lost one of its greatest country & western musical artists today, Ray Price. I've listened to Ray's music all my life and I've never tired of it; in fact, I love and appreciate it more and more as time goes on. When I think of Ray Price, certain things come to mind: his magnificent, soulful voice, over which he had extraordinary command; top-notch songs written by the best of the best composers, such as Hank Cochran, Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, Bill Anderson, and Johnny Paycheck; his legendary Cherokee Cowboys, including Buddy Emmons, and also the stellar guitar work of Grady Martin; his fabulous Nudie suits with the Native American motifs; and, of course, his marvelous twinkling blue eyes.

I've posted a few (okay, more than a few) of my favorites by Ray. I hope you enjoy hearing these songs as much as I do.

Glad you stared this thread Cali! I was thinking about some of the old songs my uncle's cover band has done. My uncle does sing quite a few of Ray's hits. Ray will be missed! They don't make 'em like a lot of these artists anymore......they are few and far between.

I think you are right Cali, they may very well honor Ray with one of his tunes as the evening jam! I hope so! I wrote about this with suggestions in the MCR shows thread before I saw your post here. What does everyone else think about Ray or his passing?

Moose, thanks for the above links. I am a HUGE fan of Marty Robbins!! I've been listening to him since I was a baby. There's a good chance that "El Paso" was the first song I ever heard. In this clip, Ray is smiling while he's singing. Usually, when he sings, he has a serious look on his face. But not when he's singing with Marty! I don't know how anyone could keep a straight face when singing with Marty. My parents saw him in concert a couple of times and they said he was very silly. Instead of singing "Big Iron", he would sing "Big Orange". "And the stranger there among them had a big orange on his hip, a big orange on his hip."

He was also a fantastic songwriter, which people may not be aware of unless they read the album credits. He's one of my favorite songwriters. I prize songwriting skills, especially melody, above everything else in a musician. Marty was one of those who excelled at both singing and songwriting.

Yes, I remember Marty Robbin's El Paso being played a lot in my home growing up. My folks listened to country, rock (60's 70's) and music from the 50's or 40's. So we had a lot of that going on while growing up! I also remember hearing "White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation" growing up. Remember that one? And you know, A long time ago, I remember seeing a rare B&W video on YouTube with Marty playing a Uke, and there was another prominent country star in the same video with him......... but I cannot find it anywhere now! Durn it! I wanted to post it up here for you. I know he loved Hawaii and spent some time there while in the military so I wondered if that was where he learned a bit of Uke. Unfortunately I cannot back up this knowledge I have sitting in the back of my brain with any proof! Augh.

Moose, I've always heard that Marty learned to play guitar while he was stationed in the South Pacific during WWII and that this is when he picked up his love for Hawai'ian music. I can't think of who might have been in the video you mentioned. I'll try to keep it in the back of my mind and if I ever run across it, I'll post it.

In this video, Marty doesn't play ukulele, but he does yodel. Plus, his guitar matches his suit.
