On Friday when most of the US was celebrating Halloween, Clogger and I went to see the legendary Ralph Stanley. I've always loved his clawhammer banjo playing so picked up tickets as soon as I found out the band would be in town! It was a good night. Songs you would most likely expect to hear were on the set lists. He did songs from the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou" and standards such as "Pretty Polly". His voice is holding up strong after 87 years. Was good to hear that "High Lonesome" in person! Ralph was accompanied by his grandson Nathan Stanley who does a fine job as lead singer/head of the band. As a young'un, he does pretty well. His grandfather has taught him well. Clinch Mountain Boys are; Nathan Stanley Guitar, vocals Dewey Brown; Fiddle and Shofar Junior Blankenship; Guitar Bass; Randall Joe Hibbitts These fellas all did a remarkable job with the show. Vocals were spot-on. Even did some accapella stuff. Ralph came in after each band member had an "introduction song" to sing that showcased each fella's particular talents. Once Ralph took the stage, he stood thru-out most of the rest of the show! He spent the intermission (at his insistence) seated in a chair at the front of the auditorium so that he could greet his fans! I would have fully expected him to take a break and head backstage at intermission. So I was impressed. He seemed to enjoy the fan interaction. All in all, we had a great time and are so glad we went!

Moose, I'm so glad that you and Cass got to see Ralph and his band perform. He truly is a legend, as well as a close, personal friend of Jim L. When you arrived home after the show, did you pull out Olabelle and play a few licks? I couldn't blame you if you did!
Cali
P.S. I had to look up 'shofar'.

Cali, here is Dewey with the Shofar! It was cool to see and hear him play it! He also talked about the horn and described it history. And above, I forgot to give credit for the banjo player! Ralph's Banjo player is Mitchel Van Dyke, I believe.

No, we got home late and were busy hearing the stories from Mr Moose about all of the ghostly visitors he has while we were at the show! We do not celebrate Halloween ouselves, but do give out candy when those who do celebrate, come to the door. So anyhow, after the show, and all of the story telling, we went to bed! Ola Belle got a vacation ha ha.

It was a great show! Moose pretty much said all of it, but one interesting thing: His wife sat on a chair on the edge of the stage and watched. In between the parts he sang, he would wander over there (with his sharpie marker he'd been signing autographs with during intermission) and chat, and then wander back to sing..... definitely not nervous on stage!

yea, Ralph was cute on stage! And he was such a smaller more fragile looking fella than I thought he'd be.
