We've been meaning to get one of Rik and Dave's shows for a while now, and thanks to Cam for pushing us into it! Now that we have, we know why everyone goes to so many!
In short, it was purely amazing. There really aren't words that can describe musical endeavors, and especially so in this case. YouTube videos don't do justice to a live show. Rik's vocal range seems to be diminished by the sound quality created by crappy cell phone cameras or cheap digital cameras and the transfer to the internet, but in person Rik sounds amazing.
The opening act was Maniac abd the Mentally Unstable. They played a great set, including Where Eagles Fly, although I didn't know the names of some of the songs. They also did and amazing job with Say Goodbye! I never thought about that song with acoustic guitars, but it sounds very good. Unfortunately I didn't get their set list.
I'm not going to go into a ton of detail here, but one thing I am going to do is give Rik & Dave's set list:
-Middle Ground
-Fantasy Serenade
-Lay It
-Libre Animado
-Deeper Kind Of Blue
-Midsummers Daydream
-Hope
-Fight
At this point there was an intermission and the deserts were served. Kim had some lovely fudge out there, by the way, which I was lucky enough to get some of. I would like to note that when they played Hope, they started and got about three bars into it when Rik exclaimed, "stop!" and said, "I forgot to de-tune this string." He also pointed out that he was hoping somebody in the back row wasn't whipping out the notebooks for a concert review and that he wasn't going to see an internet headline "Pompton Lakes concert, string tuning gone awry" or something like that, so naturally, I had to add it to my review.
Then after the intermission:
-Petite Etude
-Magic Power
-El Cuento Del Gadjo
-Boys Of Summer
-Only Time Will Tell
-The Galaxy Song
-Three Clouds
-Light of Day
-Suitcase Blues
My favorites of all these were Hope and Middle Ground.
I also wanted to thank Rik & Dave very much for thinking of me with the guitar picks!! And thanks to Cam for allowing me the honor of reading and selecting one of the tickets for the 50/50 drawing/
That concluded the show, and we all got to go back and meet Rik & Dave which was of course an honor.
Something I have to note though: Both Rik and Dave stuck their picks into their strap buttons. Rik's were fine, but Dave's periodically fell out onto the stage. He apparently watched a few of them go, yet continued to put them back there. Why does Dave continue to do things that do not work?
Anyway, we had to spend a lot of time in the van, and put in a lot of miles, but it was definitely, totally worth it!
