Where do I begin?
When I was a wee little fellow (rug rat) I have memories of a place called Sunset Park in the Maryland/Pennsylvania/Delaware area. Lot's of pickin' under the big tent and lots of Nudie Suits (I probably spelled that wrong.) Half of my family is from Maryland's Eastern Shore so that was their kind of music. It was only natural that I would pick up on it. But my influences vary wildly owing to the era that I grew up in. In no particular order (or reason):
Ferlin Husky, Jim Reeves, Eddie Arnold, Johnny Cash, The Carter Family, Dean Martin (surprised?), the great Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, The Beach Boys (Brian Wilson), The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kingston Trio, The Christy Minstells, Glenn Campbell, Peter, Paul, and Mary; Up With People (I spent three or four years singing their songs), Tommy James, anything Motown, anything Southern Rock, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, Lefty Frizzel, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Jefferson Airplane, ZZ Top, Eric Clapton in all of his incarnations, Marty Stewart, ALL of my heros of pre-1960 C&W - the pioneers, Hank Williams (Sr. and Jr.), Bizet, Wagner, Strauss, all of those guys. Sousa, Glenn Miller, WC Handy, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters..... Louis Armstrong!
My generation was exposed to such a great variety of music. Like no other generation ever has been (in real time, not historical retrospect.) Make sense? I'm a child of the "cold war" so imagine living through "Duck and Cover", "Detante'", "Glasnost", no more Berlin Wall, War on Terror. I'd Like to Teach... Sorry, couldn't help it...
Opera but only if I am in the theatre. Otherwise, they are screechers. Punk wasn't my style. Disco was tolerable for a while. Rap and Hip Hop are garbage and unimaginative (my personal view.) 80's rock I can take or leave. (there was some great Country in the 80s.) Broadway was a big influence on me.
My ancestry is Welsh and English and I naturally love Celtic music styles. (yes, I listen to bagpipes and I don't beat on the pets.)
Enough about my influences... Tell me what Rocks your world!
