OK Cali, here it is and anyone else who wants to be bored, ha ha.
I started out with green smoothies about 5 years, I think...I asked Mr Moose and he said that sounded about right. I researched them and my best resource was a book I checked out from the library called "Green for Life" by Victoria Boutenko. It was a very interesting read. Very informative. Although she and her family are more entrenched in their vegan-ism than I, I still took from it what I could.
Al of my GM (green smoothies) are made with 4 bananas as the base. I have a refurbished Vitamix mixer (after I wore out two blenders!). I love mine and it was cheaper than new but I've had it about 4 yrs with no problems. So.....four bananas start off all of my GMs. then I usually add about 3 apples...whatever is on sale is usually what I use. If I have other fruits that I need to use up, I'll add some of them in at this time. Last week I used blueberries that I put up last summer in the freezer; about a cup of them. I have used anything from strawberries to plums...apricots...etc...pears..whatever I have on hand. Sometimes at this point I will also add about a 1/8 cup of a dried fruit such as Gogi berries. Love these.
Avocado gets added...I will use a half an avocado per batch.
Then I add greens. Last week I used baby spinach which is easily obtained. But sometimes I like to make the trip into a nearby city where you can get a good selection of greens. So for this week, I got dandelion greens. Yum! In the past, I have used kale, collard greens, radicchio, Swiss chard, Bok Choy, Romaine lettuce..etc...so many I can't remember them all. When I add greens, I usually add a handful to each batch of GM made with a base of 4 bananas.
One green I do not like with my GMs are Beet Greens and mustard greens.. The latter are too spicy for me. The beet greens give your smoothie a sweet taste and they are just way too sweet for me and I cannot stand beet greens anymore in my GMs. It was just sickeningly sweet to me and my taste buds.
I buy 42 oz foam cups & lids from our nearby city's GFS. Each batch of GMs make 2-3 24 oz glassesful. I stick these in the fridge and have a "ready to go" meal when I'm busy or just ready to grab one for lunch. I take one with me if we have errands to run and we'll be out past lunch. To adjust the thickness of the GMs, I add water with the bananas if I need them thin enough to drink thru a straw. About 3 to 5 oz.
Hope this answers any of your questions Cali..if not, please feel free to ask more!
