I believe that the January 8th show will be most excellent! Here are the scheduled guests; STEEP CANYON RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes..I am a bit excited about this group being on. Have been fans of theirs since I first heard them sing "I Can't Sit Down" many years ago. They are composed of excellent musicians, songwriters/lyricists. Tell the Ones I LoveWestbound Rangers (Gee, how many rangers can you legally have on one show? haha just kidding!) ACtually these fellas have graced MCRs stage more than once with the most recent visit about a year ago. Hesitation BluesBen Sollee...Ben was last at MCR last May, I think. Glad to see him back again. UnfinishedAshley Monroe...when I first heard her last name Monroe..I at first wondered....Monroe is a big name in the history of a close musical genre....but no, this Monroe is actually related to the Carter Family. Can't complain about that! She sure has a beautiful voice. Like a RoseJoy Kills Sorrow.....This string band hails from Boston. The name sure sounds familiar but I am not sure where I have heard of them before. I am not sure that they have ever been on MCR before....Maybe someone can confirm one way or the other on that for us. Anyway, I like their upbeat sound. The instrumentation is great. I think we will definitely enjoy seeing this group perform. Was It You
Looks like MCR is coming back from break with a bang!!!! If this is the precursor for the season, we are in for a treat.

I'm hoping that the Loveless Jam will be an Everly Brothers song, in honor of Phil Everly.

Somebody (sorry I've lost track of who you were) in the MCR chat room posted this link tonight: Why Country Music Was Awful in 2013 www.youtube.com/watch?v=WySgNm8qH-IWatching this video made me appreciate the great music on MCR even more. Trucks, dirt roads, booze, "girl", HUH?? Can you say "time worn cliche" twenty times fast?? Personally speaking, I don't want a guy who drives a truck down a dirt road (nothing against trucks or dirt roads), I want a guy who drives a Ferrari down the Autobahn at 150 mph, has an IQ of 186 with a million word vocabulary, plays guitar like Kenny Vaughan, and NEVER calls me 'girl' -- it's 'Ms. Cali', thank you very much! Who are these videos aimed at, anyway? On that note, I'll say that I'm very much looking forward to next week's MCR. Ms. Cali

Ms. Cali I think they are aimed at the crowd that can only speak in single syllable words. Actually, I'm not even sure they know what a syllable is. Art

I mean no disrespect to those who are fans of what is played in country music today, but ...ummmm... I just don't get it. I mean, to each his own, but I just cannot see the entertainment or value in the song crafting or the "hooks" that are sang in most of the country music today. It just seems like "junk food" for the brain. I would rather find my own stuff to listen to instead of listening to what our local radios stations are "force feeding" us. Kinda makes me nauseated to hear a lot of it......haha. It seems like so many good, hard working singer songwriters are tossed aside so that labels can push the "next great" thing on us via entrapped radio station in order to increase their profits. There are still some good ones getting thru though...I do really like the new Alan Jackson album for example. OK, I'm off my soap box..... But still fee free to like what you like. It's a free country you know!

It just seems like "junk food" for the brain. Moose, that's a great analogy and I wholeheartedly agree. I will probably sound arrogant and condescending for saying this (it wouldn't be the first time), but I think that too many people are afraid to think for themselves and/or be seen as "different". I am fortunate to have grown up with a dad who is extremely anti-trend. He imparted this mindset to me when I was very young and it has served me well, although it hasn't always been easy being the "odd ball". However, the immense enjoyment I've received from music, books, movies, etc., that are outside mainstream tastes have more than made up for that. People should not be afraid of having discerning taste -- it's gourmet food for the brain! Cali

GREAT NEWS about the jam song last Wednesday eve! Remember how Megan felt bad since she'd told me that I had guessed the jam tune that was called "Darlin' Corey?" .......BUT.......Then Jim announced the jam tune on stage as "Dig A Hole"?? Well, Megan did not need to apologize because I really was still correct in my guess! I kind of suspected it but the chat was moving too fast to research or elaborate it at that moment. The truth of the matter is that the song is known by many different names. Many "old timey" tunes like this are traditional in a sense that they were handed down generation after generation to fiddle banjo and guitar players for decades upon decades. And during this handing down of these knowledge "songbases"....names were often forgotten or changed as each artist added his own flair or even different words or verses! I thought maybe that was the case and I did find much online to confirm this. Here is one excerpt I found in example: Darlin' Corey History Darlin' Corey is known by many names including "Dig a Hole in the Meadow," "Darlin' Cora," "Little Lulie," "Darling Cora," "Corey, Corey." It's related to "Little Maggie" "Country Blues" and other white mountain blues. Here's a list of some recordings by date: Little Corey - Clarence Gill (01/06/1927); Darling Cora - Buell Kazee (04/19/1927); Darlin' Cora - B.F. Shelton (07/29/1927); Little Lulie - Dick Justice (ca.05/1929); Darling Corey - Monroe Brothers (06/21/1936); Little Lulie - Homer Brierhopper (06/09/1938); Doc Watson (1963); Monroe Brothers (1964); Single: Bill Monroe & his Blue Grass Boys (1964). The first collected version was made by Cecil Sharp in 1918 from English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians (1932, no. 152; with tune).THE GAMBLING MAN (version B) (Sung by Mrs. Clercy Deeton at Mine Fork, Burnsville, N.C., Sept. 19, 1918) So we will have to let Megan know that indeed she was not "hoodwinked" and that indeed she can still trust Jim and that she is still or favorite chat room Mom!

Since Steep Canyon Rangers were guests on MCR on this thread, I wanted to stay organized and put a link I found; a link related to this show. I came across an interesting article about the Doghouse Bass player. Check it out then take a nap cause after you read what he does.....you will be exhausted! ha! Charles Humphrey III
